Mail Call - The Motion Update (3.0)

Here it is, the Motion Update! I can't believe I'm finally releasing it!

The Motion Update is by far the most ambitious overhaul of Mail Call and this is only the first quarter of the game's development, which is saying a lot considering how Mail Call only started out as a demo slapped together in a rush. Yet now, I'm tackling the task to transforming Mail Call into a fully-fledged shooter title.

This update is solid proof of that, and I thought I'd use the power of dev discussions to tackle it! All the details right here!

Why Motion Update?

After releasing 2.0, there were some ideas going around my mind as to what to do next with the game. One of my first ideas was to animate most of the existing (and new) sprites since it would give the game more life. Which is exactly what I did!

This update wasn't made with adding huge new worlds in mind, but rather to give the game a fresh breath of life through visual redesigns. Don't worry, there's still new features to be found here!

Watch the trailer!

I released my first Mail Call trailer! It doesn't have the best editing but it gives a good glimpse for players on what to expect before hopping into the game. The Game Jolt post for the video can be found here: https://gamejolt.com/p/mail-call-the-motion-update-has-released-watch-the-traile...

With all this out of the way, let's get into detail on this update!

Additions and Changes

This section strictly covers visual improvements, some new features and major redesigns, which were the main focuses of this update. Scroll down lower to see the little changes.

  • Most sprites have animations now! This is to give the game more life as well as give players background stuff to look at. Most existing sprites along with new ones have consistent animations.
  • Background objects have been added throughout every level.
  • Sound effects that were placeholders since the start of development were transformed.
  • Remixes of existing themes were added in certain levels.
  • All of Bop's level layouts were changed. One of the levels has you navigate to the end with two Bops!
  • The Nerve boss was drastically improved.
  • After defeating Nerve, you can pilot the bee Buzzer through a maze of spikes to a portal!
  • Through the portal, you'll be able to fight an entirely new boss. Once this boss is defeated, you'll loop back to the first world.
Improvements

This section covers the rest of the minor features within this update.

  • The Level Select background was improved.
  • Graphical background glitches were fixed.
  • On the first level, spikes have bordered the outer level to teach you NOT to go off the screen in any level.
  • You can press 9 in Bop's hub to quit the game.

Once again, there's not much feature-heavy here since it was mostly graphic improvements.

That's it for now! I'll be taking a break from updates for a while to plan out the rest of the game's development and what will be in each update. Hope you enjoy it and thanks for playing!
