Mail Call - 2.0 Update Changelog

Hello everybody! Surprised to see this update, aren't you?

When I started work on Mail Call, I never expected to get to a point where I would be actively developing an expanded, complete build of the game. I was just some random person making Baldi mods for one moment, and the next I have made my own game! WOWZA!

And yet, I felt that with the success I reached with my Baldi mods, I wanted to take a break from those and work harder to make Mail Call the best game it can be. I want it to feel like something worth investing time to play in, so that was my prime goal when I began designing the rest of the game's development.

So here we are, ready to take on another huge update to my simple little shooter! All the details right here!

Why 2.0?

The main reason this update came around anyway was the game design I had in mind at the start of development. After releasing the first builds, I went around with loads of players to get feedback and ideas to how this game can be built better in the future. Thanks to them, this update has a lot of their feedback transformed into credentials that made sure this update improved upon those things for the better.

I also had a lot of my own personal issues with the game and how it functioned. I believed I can add more content, squash bugs and spend more professional time in order to have this game bursting with quality and quantity. This isn't the nicest looking game on the planet, so I want to give my all with the design style I put within this game.

I hope that gives a little insight into why this update came around... But enough blabbering from me, let me show you what this update has to offer!

Additions and Changes

This section strictly covers major features and AI improvements, which were the main focuses of this update. Scroll down lower to see the little changes.

  • Transition screens have been added at the start of every "world."
  • Wait, the game is split into "worlds" now? That's correct! There is a whole set of levels for you to explore and uncover secrets in after completing the original ones!
  • Pop has a smaller hit box which should help you not killed immediately.
  • Spikes and altered enemy placement has been implemented within the original levels to balance the difficulty.
  • Red spheres have been added that instantly kill enemies! You won't earn points on your score for enemies being killed through those.
  • An End Stop was added between the two worlds! This lets you save your game (and unlock other perks, which will be added in future updates).
  • Wait, a SAVE feature? Yep, you can right click on the title screen to access your save file! Until I can get a better save system, this will have to do!
  • Added Bop! He's playable in the second world and has a faster bullet pattern! Bop will be playable in the first world in a future update.
  • An interactive hub was created for the second world rather than another Level Select.
  • Bop's levels were changed from a shooter style to a maze exploration style. Don't think you'll never click the left mouse button though!
  • Level designs and camera movement has expanded for Bop's levels!
  • More music has been added to make a more authentic experience.
  • Added the game's first boss, Nerve!
  • Once you've completed all of the levels, the game will loop back to the first world. Currently the ending is just a placeholder and I'll plan a better ending in the future.

Improvements

This section covers the rest of the minor features within this update.

  • Aside from the Nerve level, you can press E on any level to quit back to the level select/hub.
  • The score display is improved.
  • Fixed some tile sets not completely covering the level.
  • Because the credits are a placeholder, pressing 9 on the level select will just close the game.

Other random things?

  • I found a bug where music doesn't play on the eighth level. This is probably due to a programming oversight when transitioning to the End Stop, which I hope to fix in a future update.
  • Some Easter eggs have been added. Explore both the old and new to find them all!

Well, that's pretty much everything with this update! Hope you enjoy it since I worked hard to complete it! Some minor updates will be out in the near future and I'll be sure to announce when 3.0 releases!
